After initial training at Camp White, the division participation in the Oregon Maneuver combat exercise in the fall of 1943. Then, the division departed for the European Continent. There, the 361st Regimental Combat Team was detached to participate in the battles for Rome and the Arno River. It became the first Fifth Army unit to reach the river. In September 1944, the division crossed the Sieve River, outflanked the famous Gothic Line, and captured the Futa Pass. For its part in combat, the division was awarded the North Apennines, Po Valley and Rome-Arno campaign streamers. The division was inactivated at Camp Rucker, Alabama, in December 1945.<br \/>\n&#8220;Il sottotenente pilota John Richardson Cordeiro e Silva part\u00ec dalla base aerea di Tarquinia, dove il 1 Gruppo Caccia Brasiliano arriv\u00f2 il 7 ottobre 1944 subordinandosi al 350 Gruppo Caccia dell&#8217;Aereonautica Americana (USAAF). La bandiera brasiliana alla base aerea di Tarquinia fu issata il 14 ottobre 1944. Dopo vari giorni di addestramento i piloti brasiliani decollarono da detta base insieme ad altri P47 Thunderbolt americani per la prima missione brasiliana sulla Linea Gotica (Gothic Line). Il sottotenente Johnn Richardson era della riserva, ma poich\u00e8 al decollare il giorno 6 novembre 1944 il tenente aviatore Perdigao urt\u00f2 un palo danneggiando l&#8217;ala del suo aereo, lo sostitu\u00ec con il proprio P47. Arrivato in prossimit\u00e0 della Linea d&#8217;inverno (Winter Line) al primo passaggio fu fatto bersaglio dalla contraerea tedesca al momento di un bombardamento in picchiata, il motore prese fuoco, si mantenne in volo per un p\u00f2 di tempo tentando di riprendere quota per lanciarsi con il paracadute e comunicando tranquillamente con il caposquadriglia, ma non vi riusci, tentando l&#8217;atterragio in un terreno accidentato presso Livergnano, dove al contatto con il suolo il P47 esplose (aveva la seguente sigla e matricola: P-47D-27-RE n\u00ba 42-26782\u201d (testo a cura di Massimo Mazzanti).
