Si trova all&#8217;estremit\u00e0 meridionale del ghiacciaio Vatnaj\u00f6kull, lo stesso ghiacciaio che ricopre anche il vulcano Bardarbunga.<br \/>\nQuesto lago si form\u00f2 per la prima volta tra il 1934 e il 1935. Dal 1975 il lago sta ulteriormente crescendo, passando da 8 km\u00b2 agli attuali 18 km\u00b2 di superficie, a causa dello scioglimento accelerato dei ghiacciai islandesi.
