Con la sua estensione di 487 km\u00b2 \u00e8 il ghiacciaio pi\u00f9 grande sia della Norvegia che dell&#8217;intera Europa continentale e costituisce ci\u00f2 che resta dell&#8217;enorme ghiacciaio che circa 10.000 anni fa copriva l&#8217;intera Scandinavia.<br \/>\nIl punto pi\u00f9 elevato \u00e8 rappresentato dal H\u00f8gste Breakulen, a 1957 m s.l.m. Alcuni rami del ghiacciaio, come il B\u00f8yabreen vicino a Fj\u00e6rland e il Nigardsbreen si spingono gi\u00f9 fino nelle vallate situate a 300 m s.l.m..
