PROCIDA CELEBRATES IN THE STREETS THE RETURN HOME OF THE SEAMEN KIDNAPPED

News Report by Gennaro Savio, translation by Claudio Buttinelli, photographs by Antonio Anzalone

Nineteen days after their return home, the seamen of Procida, held hostage for months on ships "Savina Caylyn" and "Rosalia D'Amato", wanted publicly to thank the generous people of Procida for the great mobilization carried out during their long and hard period of imprisonment suffered in Somalia. And so the thousands of Procidans who in the recent months in Procida, Naples and Rome had given life with courage and pride to impressive and incisive demonstrations of popular protest to demand the immediate release of Giuseppe, Enzo, Gennaro and Vincenzo, were met in the streets for a big party. The main character of the evening, and could not be otherwise, has certainly been the Commander of the "Savina Caylyn" Giuseppe Lubrano Lavadera who, declaring that in the eleven months of captivity he felt strongly the duty to return home safe and sound the men of his crew, has proven to be a true hero of our times and a brave commander of which the entire Italian Navy can be proud.
COMMANDER GIUSEPPE LUBRANO LAVADERA
"I felt strongly the duty to bring the men of my crew at home, by their families. We did it thanks to Procida and my heart rejoices. Thanks also to you, to Mister Gennaro Savio and Domenico Ambrosino. You were really great".

Touching were the statements of Giuseppe when on stage he told of calls made to family during the eleven months of seizure and in which his little daughter asked him when he returns.

COMMANDER GIUSEPPE LUBRANO LAVADERA
"Procida, thanks from the bottom of my heart. Thanks from my family. Thank you from my little girl who when I phoned home she could not say more than "Dad, I miss you". In his words there was all the drama that the child was living. Thanks to my wife, Nunzia, I love you and I care for you".

All participants stressed their joy for the liberation of the crew of the "Savina Caylyn" and "Rosalia D'Amato" while the Mayor Vincenzo Capezzuto read a letter in which he traced the salient phases of the dramatic event. One of the most moving moments have undoubtedly given the children of Procida, the future of this Island, when they struck the song "We Are The Word".
Also this evening with its massive presence in the streets, the citizens of Procida have shown to keep alive undiminished the sense of community where there are fortunately still the values such as humanity and solidarity now extinct in the current society of unbridled consumerism. And the big and juicy pie offered to all, was certainly a piece of the great heart of this people.
