Gennaro Savio: It has not yet turned off the echo of the world record of category beaten in New York and in a few days Gianni Sasso, the outstanding athlete of the island of Ischia that without a leg, lost at the tender age of sixteen after a terrible car crash, will attend the Chicago Marathon with the clear objective of further improving the previous record and to cover the forty-two kilometers below the 5 hours, 5 minutes and 44". Gianni, excellent and exemplary sportsman, besides being a marathoner is also an excellent soccer and futsal player and with the sole aid of crutches can to realize brilliant manner of play managing to do things that many players can not do not even with two legs, that's incredible: he runs, dribble, cross, pulling the fly, leave behind, marks spectacular goals, and listen you all:he is even able to perform in spectacular overturned leaving breathless and the spectators that follow his matches are amazed. Do not believe it.
In these days, in view of new and fascinating challenge of Chicago, is training daily on the streets of the extraordinary and wonderful island of Ischia where he was born and resides. Even if there are steep ascents, descents or flat sections, Gianni racing them at a rush with the same ease as if he is walking, jumping every step forward that makes standing leaning on crutches.
We met on the street during one of his exhausting workouts. He is confident, he is full good shape and will try to not disappoint those who expect from him a new and historic undertaking on Chicago though, of course, his first goal is to reach down to the finish.
Gianni Sasso: "It has been a very, very tough preparation, especially here on the island of Ischia, that there are not rectilinear streets or appropriate kilometers, but unfortunately anyway the thing that has most damaged us, obviously since we started the preparation around 15 July was the tremendous heat that we had this year. So pratically even running in the evening we were destroyed after a workout, but also during training was really a waste of energy very, very high. Now in the last 20 days we can say that the situation is improved, we had have a milder temperature for which we were able to capitalize the enormous sacrifices that we made during the summer. I am talking of huge on plural and I am talking about us because there are five other guys that will follow me in this marathon there in Chicago and I want to mention the names because they are guys who have worked for all summer, one of whom is Giuseppe Iacono and the other is Antonio Russo and these two guys will partecipate like last year, but there will be a "new entry" as participation, and will be Enzo Colorico who have prepared all summer and being able to sell off a little weight in excess that he had and his goal is to finish his marathon; the other two who will accompany me as cameraman and journalist are :Emanuel Colella and Andrea Russo.
Nothing more, what can I say, I feel pretty good, maybe a little better than last year, but anyway I feel a lot hard effort than last year at the level of preparation. I hope sincerely to be able to finish with the same goal of last year, that is, to finish the Chicago Marathon, then probably viewing the times of this year I might realize a lower time of some minute."
While in Italy Gianni Sasso, which should be a true icon of the national sport, is literally ignored by the press and national televisions, ecxepting Rai Uno that in recent months has shown few seconds of the exploit obtained in New York, abroad begin to appreciate and emphasize the emotion of its undertakings. Following the diffusion in the Teutonic countries of the previous report realized by PCIML-TV Staff concerning the New York exploit, of the insular athlete and translated on german language, Gianni Sasso has been invited in Austria where he has partecipated to a historical Marathon of 25 Kilometers.
Incredibly, unlike what happens in Italy, our Gianni has been made welcome in Austria as a hero. Waiting him, at the finish line so many Austrians who have encouraged and applauded him, when they finished the race while the speacher with joy accompanied the arrival of "Gianni, the Italian protagonist player at the next Chicago Marathon."
But not all. Also in that ocasion Gianni has been interviewed by the broadcaster RTL, the german RAI Uno German just to understand, and RTL soon will be airing a special report about our special athlete that we hope, from now on, can acquire honours even in the nazional chronicle and not only in that international one.
At this point we must only wish to Gianni, pride and joy of the true and not defrauded Italian sport, to be able to return from Chicago with a new and extraordinary positive result.
